National Bank of Egypt

The National Bank of Egypt (NBE) was established on the 25th of June 1898, as an Egyptian joint stock company, with a capital of GBP 1 mn. It was the first bank to issue banknotes in Egypt, as it assumed the functions of the central bank until 1960. As of January 1, 1961, NBE continued to act purely as a commercial bank, becoming the oldest commercial bank in Egypt. Since its establishment, the Bank has been the cornerstone of Egypt’s national economy, thanks to its effective contributions to financing mega national projects.

NBE has always been committed to supporting the path of development. It has enriched the economic scene through expanding its banking activities and services and reaching out to citizens. The Bank holds the largest customer base in the Egyptian banking sector. In December 2024, NBE commanded a market share of 36.8% in terms of deposits and 47.5% in terms of loans. The Bank also maintains the widest network of branches with 679 branches, offices, and units, along with 7,232 automatic teller machines (ATMs) spread across the country, in addition to 633,000 point of sale (POS) machines. This emphasizes the Bank’s continuous commitment to enabling all segments of society to access financial products and services that meet their diverse needs, affirming its dedication to being “The People’s Bank.”
